In this episode, Bill and Grace Manning share their personal backgrounds and their connection to the Navajo Nation. From growing up in Virginia and navigating unexpected seasons, and how those painful experiences ultimately shaped his empathy, leadership, and reliance on God.
The Mannings recount how a high school mission trip to Arizona back in 1995 blossomed into nearly 30 years of annual summer outreach and Vacation Bible School partnerships at Hidden Springs Bible Church. They discuss the life-changing leap of faith in 2018 when they uprooted their family and moved four daughters across the country to live on the reservation full-time for five years. Born and raised on the reservation, Garland reflects on his journey about growing up attending Vacation Bible School at Hidden Springs Bible Church. Recorded on-location during a recent missions trip to the Navajo Nation in Arizona, host Cam Garven sits down with 21-year-old Carlton Yazzie. Though raised on the reservation among the Navajo community, Carlton belongs to the Paiute tribe. Having lost his birth parents at ages 14 and 15, Carlton shares how growing up surrounded by horses and a loving adopted family taught him early lessons in resilience, hard work, and determination.
Today, Carlton operates his own entrepreneurial business as a horse trainer on the reservation, taking on wild horses, breaking them, and working with multiple horses a day. He draws a vivid parallel between breaking horses and facing life's hardships: when you get thrown off or life knocks you down, you get right back on and keep building.
Note: Just days after this recording, Carlton received the tragic news that his uncle, who helped raise him, was killed in a car accident. Please keep Carlton and his family in your prayers.
